SCHOOL HISTORY
Where is Kranji?
• Kranji is located in the north of Singapore. It is part of Woodlands.
• The origin of the name "Woodlands" could be traced from its beginnings as a largely wooded area with many plantations.
• The Keranji trees were commonly found in Woodlands.
• A likely reason behind the name Kranji will be the existence of the numerous Keranji trees found in Woodlands in the early days of Singapore.
What is the Kranji Tree?
The Keranji trees are members of the leguminous family which are commonly found in the forests of Peninsular Malaysia and extending into Indonesia as well as Sabah and Sarawak. They are tall rainforest trees that bear black velvet-like pods filled with 'dried fruit-like' flesh. They are found on flat and hilly lands but not in swamps. The Keranji tree is made of a type of timber that is characterized by its strong tenacity. They are commonly used in carpentry tools, tool handles, industrial flooring, machinery parts and heavy construction.

• In 1946: Graves of war victims from Changi, other parts of the island as well as Second World War graves from Saigon Military Cemetery in French Indo-China (now Vietnam) were moved to Kranji.
• There are 4,458 Second World War casualties buried or commemorated here.
• Within the Kranji War Cemetery stands the Singapore Memorial.
